What's new in the 2018 wireless charging global survey? Jun 25, 2018

Piscataway, NJ, USA – June 19, 2018 – The WPC Wireless Charging Alliance released the 2018 Wireless Consumer Global Survey. According to a recent survey by the WPC Wireless Power Consortium, the adoption rate of wireless charging technology has significantly increased. Compared with similar surveys conducted last year, this survey shows that consumers have a wide interest in wireless charging technology.

The survey measured more than 1,600 consumers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and China who knew and experienced wireless charging technology. The results show that consumers have a strong interest in wireless charging technology. The application of wireless charging technology is not limited to home and car, but also includes hotels, airports and cafes.

As the creator of the global wireless charging standard Qi, the Wireless Charging Alliance and its more than 570 member companies have caused significant growth in wireless charging technology over the past year. Nearly 1,750 kinds of Qi-certified products are sold in retail stores, and Qi chargers are installed in thousands of public places around the world.

The main findings:

1. Wireless charging is a must-have for smartphones: The number of consumers who often use wireless charging technology has tripled since the last WPC survey. Nearly 40% of respondents claimed to use this technology. Although most users now only have one wireless charger and they have purchased it in the past two years, more and more respondents claim that they have just recently purchased a wireless charger.

2. Consumers want more Qi charging places outside their homes: The longest place for consumers to stay is the popular charging location. The survey shows that 66% of consumers use wireless charging technology at home. Cars and offices are also the main charging locations. However, consumers strongly hope to set up wireless charging points in other locations, including hotels, motels, and other public accommodation, as well as travel and retail locations such as airports, cafes, and restaurants.

3. Wireless Charging Helps to Relieve “Battery Anxiety Disorders”: Improvements in battery and charging methods (including wireless charging) have reduced the frequency of consumer battery anxiety, and 28% of consumers now say they “never” feel battery anxiety Symptoms (25% in 2016). People who don’t use wireless charging technology say that they want to buy wireless chargers because they don’t need to worry about battery power, and they don’t need to carry a battery charger.

4. Qi certification is very important. With the rise of the Qi specification, some manufacturers have begun to manufacture substandard or counterfeit products, labelled as “supporting Qi” or “Qi compatible”. These products often use the Qi logo illegally. Consumers participating in the survey believe that Qi certification provides wireless charging products with unique advantages to ensure product safety, compatibility, and reliability.

"In addition to increasing awareness, it is clear that consumer demand and interest in Qi wireless charging technology is increasing. They believe this technology can easily and safely maintain battery power throughout the day," said Menno Treffers, chairman of the WPC Wireless Charge Alliance. . "The survey shows that consumers want more wireless charging points in and outside of the car. They also want to see wireless charging points in restaurants, cafes, hotels, attractions, airplanes and trains. The battery can be easily recharged and the battery life is extended. As our global ecosystem shows a strong momentum, we believe that Qi is a universal charging method that can easily, safely and reliably give smart phones and new consumer electronics The product is charged."
